Focus on Student Support – Melanie Denton (Head of Special Education Services)

Our school is an inclusive school where students participate in the mainstream classroom and access the SEP for lessons that will enhance their Literacy, Numeracy, social/emotional and personal independence skills.  We are very fortunate to have 1 full-time SEP teacher, 1 part-time SEP teacher and 3 SEP teacher aides working with students in mainstream classrooms, small groups and individual settings.

This term the SEP will be conducting reviews of the Individual Education Plans for students with a verified disability.  This will ensure that current goals are relevant, individualised and achievable.   At the end of the year, the IEPs will change to the Individual Learning Plan to meet guidelines by Education Queensland.

The SEP supports students who require extra assistance through their involvement in LEAP programs, as well as programs based on identified needs.  Some of those programs include: Speech sessions (individual and small group; some using iPads), social skills, lunchtime activities and academic assistance.

Active Abilities Social Club for people with disabilities and their carers is a monthly program run on the last Thursday of each month from 10:00-12:00pm at 30 Karina Street Gailes.  It costs $3.00 per person, and is a social club filled with fun activities, music and dancing.  Please contact the SEP if you would like more information.

Chappy James has been supporting a range of activities within the school.  He assists in the classroom, runs needs-identified clubs, as well as joining the students for fun at lunchtimes – organising equipment to be borrowed and interacting in the playground.  He has become part of the Kruger team, and if you see Chappy James feel free to introduce yourself and say hi!
