FOCUS ON POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT AT KRUGER SS: PART 2 CHERIE MOORE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – YEAR 4 & 5
The focus for this newsletter is to learn more about our three expectations and how we help our students become successful learners, school community members and citizens in our school and community.  All students and staff members use this language to talk about good and not so good behaviour across the school.  We talk the same talk and help students be clear about how to behave at school.
With 960+ students at Kruger SS we have many different communities represented across our school.  By talking the same talk, keeping it simple and clear we can help each other be successful at school and in our learning.  We talk about these expectations under the heading of:
THE KRUGER TEAM or KRUGER KID
BE SAFE:
Being safe means that, all students are thinking about safety in all parts of school and at all times.  So being safe is about being safe towards each other, being in the right place, playing by the rules, walking on concrete, following directions given, following road rules and washing my hands after going to the toilet.  Following these safe expectations ‘KEEPS EVERYONE SAFE’ all the time.
BEST EFFORT:
Best effort tells our students the importance of learning, and the type of effort that we expect from them in every day in every lesson.  It focuses on students learning and understanding the importance of being prepared, looking after their own/others property, being a good friend and class mate, doing quality book work and always trying EVEN WHEN IT IS HARD.
BE RESPECTFUL:
Being respectful is the expectation that drives all interactions and learning that we do at Kruger SS.  Showing respect to adults, each other and towards themselves is very important in order for students to be successful in the out of the school environment.  Recently our focus with students has been on speaking and interacting with staff members politely and with manners even when things are not going so well.  By teaching students this we assist them to express themselves better verbally to solve problems rather than using aggression and frustration.
Each term we look at our school data, and see what behaviours may send students to the office or blue room. Our Term 2 data has established four main areas to work with students on in Term 3:
 
·         Bullying Prevention – learning how to stop/reduce bullying incidents across the school by not being a bystander to teasing, hurting or name calling.
·         Speaking respectfully to each other and adults within the school at all times.
·         Having-a-go at school even when it is hard.
·         Following instructions.
 
So, ask your kids about these lessons.  Talk to them about the school expectations and how this helps them be successful at school.  See if you have rules at home that are the same!
